Derived from the Greek words “Phlebo-“which pertains to a blood vessel, and “-tomia,” which means cutting off, phlebotomy is an entirely Greek word.
The process of drawing blood from a patient is called venipuncture.
The medical field is growing, and a rapidly expanding city like San Diego is in high demand for all medical professional types, including phlebotomists.

1 Family Health Services
About
Family Health Service is a medical facility offering treatments and learning, such as the Phlebotomy Training Program.
To be eligible, students must hold a high school diploma.
For those without phlebotomy experience, 40 classrooms, 50 practical, and 80 clinical hours are required for completion.
Those with six months of experience or more only need 40 classroom hours of training, which can be completed online.
Courses
Coursework covers the standard phlebotomy anatomy curriculum, medical terminology, drawing blood techniques and related equipment, laboratory terminology, safety, equipment preparation, and proper specimen sampling for laboratory analysis.

About
The Phlebotomy Technician 1 program offered by San Diego Mesa College costs $26 per unit for in-state residents.
This doesn’t cover the cost of examination fees, a background check, uniforms, supplies, or books.
To be considered for the program, students must match placement requirements, complete confirm English skills, and present a letter of recommendation and personal statement of goals.
Courses
The curriculum is a combination of classroom and clinical experience.
To complete the program, students must complete a minimum of 50 venipunctures and 25 capillary punctures and observe two arterial punctures.
The classroom portion of the program includes medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, equipment, and safety.
