About the School

Columbus Phlebotomy Training Center offers short training programs for phlebotomy and medical assisting only.

This specialization allows them to provide an excellent education for students wanting to begin a career in healthcare.

Programs Offered

The medical assistant program takes 10 weeks to complete.

Students will begin the program in phlebotomy.

Once they’ve completed the 5 week phlebotomy course, they will move on to the medical assistant portion.

Students will learn to prepare treatment and exam rooms for patients, preparing patients for examinations, treatments, and procedures.

They will also learn to perform blood draws, give injections, and take vital signs.

They also learn to perform administrative duties, including scheduling lab work, and filing patient records and prescriptions.

Students will study subjects including anatomy, physiology, phlebotomy, medical terminology, medication administration, and how to maintain electronic health records and call in prescriptions to pharmacies.

Students will receive a 2 year certification from the American Red Cross in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers in CPR and AED.

Students will complete 5 quizzes, a written midterm, a final venipuncture and finger stick exam, a final CMA practical exam, and a final CMA written exam.

3 Columbus State Community College

About the School

Columbus State Community College offers a wide degree of certificates and degree options.

Students can continue their education by transferring to a 4 year college after obtaining an associate’s degree, or begin their new career.

Programs Offered

The college offers a medical assistant certificate program.

The program began in 1996, with approval from the Ohio Board of Regents.

In 1999, a medical assistant associate’s degree program gained accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

In 2006, the two programs were combined.

Students can obtain their Medical Assisting Certificate, and then continue studying to receive their Medical Assisting Associate’s degree.

This is known as a one plus one program.

After completing the certificate program, students can take the CMA examination, which is credentialed by the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants.

Students will learn general medical knowledge, which includes medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, medical law and ethics, and behavioral science.

They will also learn administrative aspects of medical assisting, including medical records management, insurance processing, and collections.

Clinical knowledge will include exam room techniques, medication preparation and administration, and laboratory procedures.

Students are required to complete 210 externship hours during the summer to complete the program.

Columbus State offers Ohio first scholarships for medical assistants, as well as many other in-demand professions.

This can allow students to get their education without student debt.
