Missouri Requirements for Interior Designers

According to the state of Missouri, to obtain registration as an interior designer, an individual must fulfill the requirements.

The National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination or an equivalent exam authorized by the division must be taken and passed.

Besides proof of passing the exam, the application must supply the division with convincing evidence that the applicant:

  • Has finished a four- or five-year approved interior design degree program and at least two years of diverse and relevant interior design practice; or
  • Is a graduate of a recognized interior design program with a minimum of three years of relevant, diverse, and suitable experience in the field; or
  • Is an interior design graduate with a minimum of four years of diverse and suitable experience from a recognized two-year interior design program; or
  • Those who are currently licensed to practice architecture as well as registered with the department may be eligible for consideration.

To check existing registration in the practice of the profession, these applicants must provide the division permission to do the verification.

Second, if an application complies with this section and has paid the requisite fees, the division will suggest that such an applicant be recognized by the division as a registered interior designer.

No Registration Required for Residential Projects

It is against the law for local and state governments to enforce the usage of licensed interior designers.

The need for a registered interior designer is not required by the state or any county, city, or other public authority for any home construction, upgrading, restoration, or development.

Furthermore, no one can utilize the title or name “registered interior designer” in Missouri unless they are registered as required by the state.

When it comes to interior design services, nothing in the code is going to stop someone from doing what they do best, provided that they do not advertise that they are registered as an interior designer.
