If the job exceeds $25,000, a Tennessee-issued contractor’s license with a commercial electrician (CE) classification will be necessary.
- The location of the electrical work or project. It is important to check with your local code enforcement office to see what is acceptable in any particular area. In certain places, electrical codes are defined by the Division Of Fire Prevention and can usually be LLE performed.

Memphis Electrical JATC offers both continuing education and an inside wireman electrician training program in the Memphis area.
The five-year program from the MEJATC includes 900 hours of related study plus 8,000 hours of onsite on-the-job training.

Moore Tech offers two related electrician training programs from its Memphis campus.
Moore Tech offers a two-year diploma or an Associate of Applied Technology in Industrial Electricity and Plant Maintenance degree program for daytime students.
The school also offers a two-year certificate program for those who wish to attend classes at night.
Enrolled students get hands-on experience in electrical wiring, national electric code, electric motor control, industrial fluid power, and more.

3 Southwest Tennessee Community College
Southwest Tennessee Community College offers several electrician training programs from both its Union Avenue and Macon Cove Campuses.
The first option is the electrical/electronic fundamentals technical certificate, which requires students to complete 18 program credits.
The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree program in Electrical Engineering Technology requires a two-year commitment and 61 credit units to graduate.
Sample classes include digital fundamentals, AC and DC circuits, and more.

4 The Tennessee College of Applied Technology – Various Campuses
The Tennessee College of Applied Technology offers a full-time electrician training program throughout various campuses across Tennessee.
TCAT also offers optional credentials at various levels.
Classes for this program include understanding NEC, bonding and grounding, and photovoltaic systems.
