Do Electricians Need A License in Colorado?
Electricians working anywhere in Colorado must hold a valid license issued by the state’s Department of Regulatory Agencies – DORA.
When starting as a new apprentice, trainees must first register with the state and find a licensed electrician under which to train.
Colorado’s DORA issues these types of electrician licenses:
- Residential Wireman – at least 2 years and 4,000 hours of residential work experience.
- Journeyman Electrician – at least 4 years and 8,000 hours of experience – of which 4,000 hours must be of commercial or industrial experience. There are also education requirements of at least 288 hours of instruction within a classroom.
- Master Electrician – comply with –
- At least one year with 2,000 hours of construction experience AND a graduate electrical degree from an accredited higher learning institution. -OR-
- At least four years with 8,000 hours of experience AND a graduate electrical degree from an accredited higher learning institution. -OR-
- At least one year with 2,000 hours of construction experience, AND the applicant has met all the journeyman licensing requirements.
According to the statisticians at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook, the number of electricians working in the state of Colorado during May of 2021 exceeded 17,000; an average yearly salary at that time was $58,440.
Additionally, there were more than 10,900 electricians working in Denver.
This remarkable exceeds more than half the state’s professionals.
These Denver professionals had a yearly average wage of $59,850 in 2021, which is just about equal to the state average.

The IECRM offers the apprenticeship program as well as in-person and online continuing education that can be applied towards licensing requirements.
The four-year electrician training program is accredited by the United State Department of Labor.

Lincoln College of Technology offers an electrician training diploma program in Electrical and Electronic Systems Technology.
This 1,200-hour course is available in day, afternoon, or evening classes.

4 The Denver Joint Electrical - JTCA
The Denver Joint Electrical offers one of the city’s oldest electrician training programs.
The Denver Joint Electrical offers three types of electrician-related apprenticeships – the three-year residential apprenticeship, the five-year inside wireman apprenticeship, and the three-year telecommunications installer-technician apprenticeship.
The Denver Joint Electrical also provides its members with continuing education opportunities.
